Recipe box scheme Gousto says its recently piloted sustainable packaging will this year help the company meet its pledge to halve the amount of plastic in its packaging.
The business cut its plastic use by 100 tonnes in 2019thanks to changes such as selling more loose veg and introducing cardboard punnets for mushrooms, eggs and tomatoes.
When it is rolled out fully this year, Gousto expectsits new temperature-controlledpackaging solution, which isplastic-free and 100 per cent recyclable,to remove a further 74.5t of plastic. These measures combined will ensure the company meets its pledge to halve its plastic packaging.
In addition, the meal kit provider has committed to ensuringall Gousto-branded packaging is reusable, recyclable or compostable by the end of 2022, adding that it would continue to explore new materials, technologies and processes, while working with suppliers to reduce plastic packaging further.
Gousto’s chief executive and founder Timo Boldt said: “Our heavy investment in technology and AI has helped us to reduce food waste and more recently achieve a significant breakthrough in reducing plastic in our recipe boxes.
“This paired with the sheer tenacity of our employees to own the solution, has enabled us to make huge progress across our supply chain.”
