LEAF’s chief executive Caroline Drummond has been named one of the ‘Women of the Decade’ at theWomen Economic Forum for her work to make agriculture more sustainable.
Drummond accepted the award at the annual event in New Delhi on 12 April, which celebrates achievers from all walks of life – mainly women but also some men.
WEF, now in its 25thyear, is a global platform that brings together pioneers and practitioners in a range of industries including circular economy, agriculture, sustainable development, and all aspects of engagement and empowerment.
The overall theme of this year’s event was “Reimagining societies: reclaiming humanity with gender equality”.
LEAF chairman Philip Wynn said: “The award is a testament to her passion, hard work and dedication to global sustainability issues.”
Drummond herself added: “It is a great honour to receive this award. I am very humbled to be selected and grateful for the support of my colleagues over the years, with whom I would like to share this recognition.
“It signals LEAF’s growing recognition on the global stage in driving more sustainable farming. As we strive to ensure the impact of our work is meaningful, such an award greatly raises LEAF’s profile in demonstrating what we do and what our farmers achieve.”
Drummond has led LEAF since it was first set up in 1991.Her work focuses on encouraging more sustainable farming practices and building better public understanding of farming and the environment.
She is actively involved in many industry partnerships and initiatives, and in 2009 the LEAF chief executive was awarded an MBE for services to the agricultural industry.
In addition, she has an honorary doctorate from Harper Adams University, as well as a Nuffield scholarship studying what farmers can learn from science to improve the nutrition of food.
Drummond will join a plenary session at WEF to discuss the topic: ‘Leaders of the decade in thought leadership, innovation and sustainability’.
