Waste management service provider Axil is working with the market to help make it a greener, safer and more attractive place to do business
A green transformation is underway at Birmingham Wholesale Market (BWM) with support from waste management firm Axil.
Firstly, the market is installing solar panels to reduce its reliance on external power sources, minimise its carbon footprint, and cut operational costs.
Secondly, it is moving to using electric vehicles for waste collection and transportation.
And thirdly, it is adopting advanced waste segregation technologies to reduce waste volumes and boost recycling rates.
BWM said the introduction of a ‘pay as you throw’ system, where tenants are charged fees based on the weight of their waste, aligns with its goal of achieving net-zero waste and encouraging tenants to adopt more responsible waste management practices.
In addition, BWM is launching a pallet recycling system that offers tenants rebates for participating in recycling programmes to encourages a culture of sustainability.
The market is also strengthening its health and safety standards with an overhaul of its protocols and infrastructure. New measures include advanced equipment for handling hazardous materials and improved market infrastructure.
BWM explained that regular audits and feedback mechanisms are also employed to proactively address potential risks, ensuring that safety practices remain effective and up to date. And the market said it invests in training and awareness programmes for tenants and staff.
BWM’s general manager Andrew Barnes said: “Our collaboration with Axil has been crucial in advancing our sustainability goals. Their expertise and dedication to implementing effective solutions have not only helped us reduce waste but have also made a tangible positive impact on our operations and the environment.
“Axil’s commitment is not just talk; it’s about acting and making a positive impact on the environment, the market, and the community.”
A spokesperson from the market added: “As BWM continues to evolve, its reputation as a leader in sustainability and safety is expected to enhance its global standing and attract even more visitors…
“These efforts reflect a broader commitment to environmental stewardship and operational excellence, positioning BWM as a model for other markets to follow.”
