WRAP (the Waste & Resources Action Programme) has launched a new guide to help fruit growers for applying compost mulch to rows of fruit trees as they search for larger yields.

WRAP launched the guide, which is aimed at growers who use compost but are struggling to make the most of it, at Fruit Focus last Wednesday

It offers growers advice on distribution of compost mulch as well as practical tips on application rates, timings, machinery selection and suppliers.

The guide follows a number of scientific trials that have been conducted on compost use in the south-east of England, including one on apple trees in Kent, where yields increased by nearly 50 per cent and profits were significantly boosted. Such results have encouraged the increasing use of compost in the area.

William McManus, project officer for agriculture and horticulture, told freshinfo: “We have already had some very positive reaction to the guide. A lot of people use compost already but don’t necessarily know how to get the best from it.

“It is relatively cheap, at a couple of pounds per tonne in some cases, but people worry about the haulage and application costs bringing their costs up. Growers have to see that is has tremendous benefits to their yield, as well as being environmentally friendly, so those costs are brought down by having more fruit.

“Obviously it's important to prevent waste but also our focus is on the unavoidable waste that has to be produced and do whatever we can to avoid going to landfill.”
