Organic grocer Whole Foods has restarted its plans for expansion in the UK as sales begin to recover at its US business.
Co-president Walter Robb said that the company is looking for sites around half the size of its existing 75,000 flagship site in London’s Kensington High Street in an interview with The Financial Times.
He said: “We want to build more stores in London, it’s a fabulous city. It’s harder to find real estate there… but we have some stuff there and we’re working on it”.
The company recently said that there had been a double-digit sales improvement at its Kensington store, although the site was still operating at a loss.
Whole Foods already has smaller shops in London in Camden, Soho, Stoke Newington and Clapham, as well as its larger store on Kensington High Street.
Last year, ceo John Mackey said: “We are demonstrating that we can operationally adjust to lower sales volumes and believe that this flexibility, combined with our improved balance sheet, will enable us to emerge stronger and better positioned over the long term."
