Vegetable companies Produce World and Huntapac have this week supplied purple Chantenay carrots into Waitrose stores for the first time.
Grown by Freshgro, the carrots launched in 120 Waitrose stores yesterday (15 September) and will be available for around six weeks.
“In many ways it’s the perfect combination in one product,” said Waitrose buyer Patrick Keane. “We know that people love the sweet taste of Chantenay carrots. The purple colour is something of a novelty and these carrots will look fantastic on the plate, whether in a salad, stew or cooked as one of your vegetables.
“We’ll be stocking them in 120 stores for a six-week period and I anticipate that they will be very popular.”
Purple carrots are rich in vitamin A and beta-carotene like orange carrots, but they also have high levels of antioxidants, similar to that found in blueberries.
