US cherry growers are hoping to tap into the health needs of consumers with it latest PR campaign.
Northwest Cherries from Washington State are promoting their fruit as a healthy snacking alternative and are linking up with the latest GI diet fad.
A spokesman said: “Cherries have a low glycaemic index of about 30. Foods that have a low GI rating release a steady stream of energy into the body and help satisfy you more.”
The promotion will also see a focus on the fact that a single portion of just 10 cherries has just 37 calories and the fruit makes an ideal snack for children.
Dr Juliet Gray, Northwest cherries nutritionist, is backing the campaign and said: “In the UK our intake of fruit and vegetables is still well below the recommended five or more pieces a day, particularly amongst children. It’s important that we eat more fresh fruit and vegetables, such as Northwest cherries, because of the essential nutrients they contain.”
