Waitrose has ramped up its British apple campaign with the first of a two-week television advert series fronted by Alan Titchmarsh.

The advert was filmed at the orchard of longstanding Waitrose grower Jeremy Linsell, who is based in Eye, Norfolk.

Named “The Story of the Brilliantly British Apples”, the 40-second advert aired on ITV during Emmerdale this week.

It will also appear on Channel 5, Sky Sports 2 and More 4 and will run until 6 October.

Last year Waitrose had a 9.7 per cent market share in British apples and pears and exclusively stocks Linsell’s Suffolk Pink variety. The premium retailer is stocking over 50 varieties of apple this year.

Waitrose apple buyer Greg Sehringer said that this year’s warm summer had resulted in particularly high sugar levels in British apples. He added: “The skin is smoother with less russet, which is fantastic news for both our growers and customers.”

Titchmarsh and Linsell have also appeared together in a short online film about British apples on Waitrose TV.
