Fruit and vegetable growers and traders from around the world met this month in Barendrecht, The Netherlands, for The Greenery Day - an annual conference and festive occasion organised by The Greenery.
This year’s theme was globalisation. In its ten years of existence, The Greenery has evolved from a regional auction into an international marketing organisation for fruit, vegetables and mushrooms. It is now one of Europe's major producers and importers of fresh fruit and vegetables with an average annual turnover of approximately €1.9 billion - but it still remains a grower-owned co-operative.
"The Greenery is no longer a local player but a company of global proportions," said general director Philip Smits in his introductory speech. "The Greenery is unique in the world. Premium quality Dutch produce is complemented by The Greenery with produce sourced from all over the world, so we can offer a comprehensive package all year round."
