A lucky punter from Essex has scooped £250 worth of Tesco vouchers as part of a promotion organised by pineapple and melon importer Keelings (UK) Ltd with the UK’s number-one supermarket.

The Keelings promotion gave Tesco customers the chance to receive a free pineapple corer after purchasing two Gold pineapples and sending off their details.

More than 7,000 corers were despatched, despite only a small proportion of stores receiving the promotional fruit. Once customers received the corer, there were details enclosed of a free prize draw for the Tesco vouchers by emailing in their favourite pineapple recipe idea. Chelmsford’s Kevin Knight was the lucky winner.

One of the UK’s largest importers of pineapples and melons, Keelings is category leader for Tesco. Claire Power of Keelings (UK) said: “We wanted to do something more creative and exciting compared to the popular price promotions you see around produce. This was a great opportunity to add some more theatre to the category, as well as help to drive long-term sales. This was definitely an excellent giveaway as it introduced customers to a new method of preparing pineapples in the home.”

Knight and his family were delighted when they received the news that they had won the vouchers. He said: “The corer has transformed the way we prepare pineapples and means a lot less waste, as well as making the fruit easier to prepare. We use it every time we have pineapples.

“We tend to buy pineapples and melons twice a month (along with other fresh produce) and ensure we all have five portions of fruit and vegetables a day to help keep us healthy.”

The Knight family is going to use the vouchers to purchase some new garden furniture before dividing the remainder of the vouchers between sons Sam and Jordan for them to buy a selection of games.
