Tesco has bought an extra 500 tonnes of British strawberries to help growers shift a flush of fruit created by a warm spring.
The promotion of a 1kg box of strawberries for £3 began over the last May bank holiday and will continue for another week, while the extra volumes will help producers in Kent, Herefordshire and other parts of the UK this month, Tesco said.
Strawberry buyer Henry Maulik said: “At Tesco, we’re passionate about working in partnership with our suppliers so that no edible food goes to waste. Offering great tasting, high quality British strawberries at an extraordinary good price has been hugely popular with our customers and helps support our growers.”
Tesco said it has been able to take bumper crops on produce including cauliflowers, carrots, cherries and lettuce during the last year.
