Schoolchildren in South Wales have had a helping hand in growing their own vegetables thanks to the volunteering efforts of employees from Blakemore Retail.

Thirty employee volunteers from across Blakemore’s head office and six company-owned Spar stores created an outdoor allotment area for Year 2 pupils and nursery schoolchildren at Cefn Glas Infant School, Bridgend, on 10 July.

The team of volunteers worked to build raised vegetable planters, repair a drinks bottle greenhouse, undertake general gardening duties and re-gravel the outside space of the nursery area.

In addition, Blakemore Retail ran a colouring and drawing competition with the school which will involve pupils handing in their completed pictures at their local Spar store. The winning pupil and two runners up were rewarded with gift vouchers to spend in any of the four Bridgend Spar stores.

All pupils were given a grow-your-own herbs egg to take home with them to encourage children to continue to grow at home.

Blakemore Retail operations support assistant Hayley Parsons said: “Our team have worked hard build strong relationships with Cefn Glas Infants; we see this as a fantastic opportunity to not only encourage and educate the pupils but also to build great committee relations.

'We look forward to seeing the future benefits to both the pupils and the school itself. The project has brought a wide range of skills, knowledge and awareness to our team, helping us grow together.”

Blakemore Retail currently employs more than 7,800 people, and has a turnover of around £1.3 billion.
