Students from Brownhills Community College celebrate their win with Spar distribution business supporters

Sixth Form students from seven Walsall schools came together to compete for the title of Spar Social Entrepreneur at the Bescot Stadium.

The event which was organised by Walsall Education Business Partnership, alongside AF Blakemore & Son Ltd’s Spar distribution division, investigated how businesses can accomplish goals that enhance social and environmental concerns.

Around 50 students were challenged to develop an ethical business idea with the assistance of a member of Spar distribution’s senior management team. The teams of students then presented their idea to a panel of judges, who had the difficult task of deciding who would walk away with the Spar Social Entrepreneur of the year trophy.

Brownhills Community College scooped the trophy with their ‘Two Wheelers’ delivery service concept, which looked to deliver to customers with mobility problems. Judges were extremely impressed by the originality and community benefits of this idea.

Dennis Evans, managing director of AF Blakemore’s Spar distribution division, said: “AF Blakemore & Son Ltd has a long history of working with schools across Walsall and this represents one of the biggest one-off events we have been involved with.

“We are keen to share our business knowledge with local schools and hopefully we will also be able to take a few ideas from the students who took part.”

Lorenzo Cosco, of Walsall Education Business Partnership, said: “Walsall EBP is delighted to have the support of AF Blakemore & Son Ltd for this year's Sixth Form Social Enterprise Challenge.

“It is essential that students are given as much contact with the business community as possible and they will certainly learn a lot by interacting with such a prestigious local employer.

“AF Blakemore & Son Ltd’s commitment to providing a number of senior managers to work with the students has given the whole event a new dimension.”
