A diverse farm shop and visitor centre in Somerset has reached the final of this year’s Farmers Weekly Awards.

White Row Farm Shop, Beckington, has made it to the final three in the highly competitive Local Food Farmer of the Year category. It was selected by a panel of industry experts for its success in identifying and serving local markets with its own farm produce.

Steve and Heather Tucker established the farm shop in 2000. Heather said: “We decided the only way to save the business was to diversify, so we took a huge gamble and developed one of the farrowing houses into a farm shop. It has been going from strength to strength ever since.

“As customers grow more wary of large-scale supermarkets, we strive to be friendlier, serve better quality produce and support the community as much as possible. After all, supporting the community has always been part of farming. It's just in our nature.”

The couple are passionate about serving home-produced, seasonal food at reasonable prices, and seek to produce as much of what they sell as possible, including their own pork, eggs, vegetables and salads.

The winner in the category will be announced at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London, on October 8.
