The Summerfruit Company has won the soft-fruit double at last week’s National Fruit Show. The Redbridge-Worldwide Fruit joint venture’s strawberry grower Peter Wensak took first prize in the strawberry competition for his glasshouse Elsanta while Canterbury grower Charles Atkins walked off with the top accolade for his raspberries.

"Peter has a history of winning awards and we are really proud to have him as one of our growers," said Worldwide Fruit’s marketing director Steve Maxwell. "But this is pretty new for Charles and it is down to the success of his Polka raspberries. He wanted to give the variety a wider audience and he is achieving that."

The company reports English glasshouse strawberry quality is excellent with good volumes this week and cropping expected to continue into December.

Meanwhile, autumn fruiting UK raspberries are finishing their season with limited volumes only available as Spanish supplies take up the baton.
