Tesco's Colin Holmes, left, presents the award to James Simpson

English apple and pear grower Adrian Scripps Ltd has been named Tesco’s Fruit Grower of the Year and also won the retailer’s ultimate prize: Overall Produce Grower of the Year.

The firm was recognised at Tesco’s grower and supplier awards ceremony last week, celebrated in a gala event at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London.

The presentation was made to Scripps’s md James Simpson at the event, which celebrated supplier success worldwide.

Additionally, the Kent-based company was a runner-up in Tesco’s Nurture award for variety development for its innovation and investment in Kanzi apples.

Simpson said: “To be considered for an award is recognition we appreciate, but to be in three categories and to win two is extremely pleasing.

“We were delighted also to be runners-up early in the evening [in the Nurture award]...

“We consider this a fantastic achievement and are extremely proud to be the recipients of the awards - when your customer recognises what you do for them and singles you out, it is very gratifying.”

Company chairman Richard Scripps praised his staff for their attention to detail at every stage of the production and supply chain. He said: “We have worked very hard in recent years to move forward and meet the requirements of our customer. We are delighted to be recognised for this.”

Adrian Scripps Ltd supplies Tesco in partnership with Richard Hochfeld Ltd. Simpson said that the strong relationship between the two companies is “one of the cornerstones of Scripps’s ongoing success, and the awards are due in part to our joint efforts”.
