A primary school from Hampshire has won Foods from Spain’s national competition to design a collage on the theme of healthy eating with fresh fruit and vegetables.
Children from Southbourne Junior School won the 2009 National Primary Schools Competition with their “5 A DAY the Spanish way” collage, showing a colourful and cheerful collection of Spanish fruits and vegetables.
The school beat hundreds of entries from around the country to receive the first prize of £3,000 to spend on new equipment or facilities.
The third National Primary Schools Competition was launched in April, as part of Foods from Spain’s campaign to promote Spanish fruit and vegetables. The competition asked classes in Years 3 to 6 from all primary schools in the UK to produce a collage that represented “healthy eating with fresh fruit and vegetables from Spain”, using materials from glossy magazines to dried fruit and nuts.
Presenting the cheque to the school, María José Sevilla, director of Foods from Spain, said: “Educating children about including fruit and vegetables in their diet is more important today than ever, and this competition really focuses the minds of teachers, parents and pupils on the imperative to eat well - and the role Spanish fresh produce has to play in doing so.”
