Sainsbury's latest initiative to save the planet will see it print on both sides of its till receipts.

By literally cutting shoppers’ bills in half, the Uk’s third largest supermarket chain Sainsbury's says it will save 89.3 million metres of till roll a year - enough to stretch round the world three and a half times.

The smaller bills have already been launched in 34 stores and will be introduced to a further 200 this year.

Sainsbury’s claims the move means:

• 3,828 fewer trees a year will be cut down;

• 219,229KW less electricity is being used;

• making a saving of 464 cubic metres of landfill space;

• and 508,252kg of saved paper.
