Sainsbury’s has swept the board at this year’s Brammy awards, the Bramley apple industry’s annual celebration.

Sainsbury’s was named Best Multiple Retailer and recognised for its outstanding and innovative use of Bramley apples in its own label products.

Elsewhere, foodservice businesses Reynolds and Compass as well as celebrity chef James Martin were recognised at the ceremony, held at the prestigious Groucho Club in London on Thursday.

Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference Bramley and Pork Sausages picked up the Best Bramley Meat award and Taste the Difference Kentish Bramley Apple Pie scooped the Best Bramley Sweet Product.

Lee Turner, top-fruit buyer at Sainsbury’s, said: “Once again we have led the way on British apples and we’re immensely proud to win this award, which is a clear sign that our customers enjoy both the quality and choice that we offer. At Sainsbury’s we always want to source the best of British where we can so we’re delighted that this award clearly demonstrates our commitment to this."

This year also saw Cottage Delight’s Sweet Apple Chutney win the Best Savoury Bramley Product and Colman’s pick up the Best Bramley Apple Sauce award.

Adrian Barlow, chairman of the Bramley Apple Campaign, said: “The standard of entrants this year was incredibly high making the final judging a very tough task. The winners have made outstanding efforts to drive sales and promote the Bramley apple over the last year, while winners working in the media have inspired consumers to use more Bramley and in a wider range of dishes.”

He said sales of Bramley were down this season due to a strong 2010 which saw the Bramley industry celebrate the apple’s bicentenary. He said, disregarding the 2010 results, UK Bramley is in long-term growth.
