AF Blakemore & Son Ltd’s managing director has been named the 2009 Prince’s Ambassador for the West Midlands in recognition of his leadership and commitment to responsible business.

Peter Blakemore heard the announcement in a video message from HRH The Prince of Wales at Business in the Community’s Awards for Excellence at The Belgrade Theatre in Coventry.

AF Blakemore & Son supplies Spar stores in a zone known as the Central Meridian Guild. This covers a stretch of land from North Wales to East Anglia. It also reaches up to Lincolnshire and spreads as far south as the Thames Estuary.

The Prince’s Ambassador Award is presented to individuals whose leadership and commitment to responsible business has resulted in changes and improvements inside their own company and who have also inspired other organisations to take action.

David Darlaston, regional director of business in the community said: “I am delighted that Peter has been recognised by HRH The Prince of Wales. In the current climate it’s never been more important for businesses to show their leadership when it comes to responsible business issues.

“Peter is passionate about supporting his employees and the community; he has consistently encouraged his staff to volunteer for projects which make a real difference to local schools and community groups.”

HRH The Prince of Wales said in the video message: “As I reflect on the challenges and successes as president of Business in the Community, it strikes me that unlocking talent and potential is the underpinning theme of everything I’ve been committed to over the past 26 years.

“Peter’s enthusiasm and dedication to making a difference as well as his courage to take a risk on new initiatives is why I am so thrilled to name him as my Ambassador for the West Midlands.”
