Rockwell Solutions has announced that it has achieved compostable certification for its Biopeel PLA lidding and flow wrap films.

Biopeel PLA is available for sealing to and peeling from all container types, including films and foil.

Biopeel PLA has been approved for food contact, chilling, freezing, microwaving and ovening. Anti-fog, barrier, print and breathability are all available for any application.

It claims to be the world’s first biodegradable and renewable PLA peelable lidding that is compostable and renewable, completely clear, peelable and suitable for fruit, vegetables and salads.

This comes after Rockwell’s moisture resistant sugar cane tray, iTray, was approved for food contact, chilling, freezing, microwaving and ovening.

The iTray is the world’s first compostable, renewable and moisture resistant sugar cane tray for chilled and frozen ready meal applications.

Rockwell cite the benefits of the iTray as reducing the weight of packaging where possible, recyclable or compostable packaging waste, the use of sustainable raw materials without detriment to the food supply and the use of post-consumer recycled (PCR) material where possible.

There is a demand in the market to use crop-based materials to produce our tray and film packaging requirements. The desire to use non-edible waste produced in harvesting and processing is high, as this material has no further end use.

However, such materials have a very poor moisture barrier, which leads to product such as the sauces found in ready meals seeping through the walls of the tray either over their life, or, during cooking. Further, acidic products attack the walls of

the trays and cause the product being packed to degrade beyond any acceptable level.
