Riverford salad hots up

Riverford Organics has erected unheated polytunnels to boost its salad supply.

The south Devon business began digging at the Wash Farm site on Tuesday ahead of a September target and subsequent autumn planting.

The four-acre investment comes a year of negotiations with local authorities and Riverford is to landscape extensively to “camouflage” the tunnels.

A spokesperson told FPJ: “The idea is that in the winter we can still grow our salad packs with lettuce, rocket and mizuna.”

In the summer, the business will grow mini cucumbers, “low carbon” tomatoes, basil, spring onions and purslane at the site in the summer.

Riverford Organic will also continue to source fresh produce from two Andalusian growers who do not use artificial heat when UK produce is not in season.
