Discounting round has echoes of supermarkets’ strategies over Christmas

Morrisons and Asda have slashed the price of British seasonal veg to just 8p in time for Easter weekend roasts.

The steep discounting has echoes of the Christmas price war, when supermarkets offered key veg lines for mere pennies over the festive period.

From 14-20 April, Morrisons More Card holders can pick up 1kg of British carrots, 500g of British parsnips and a British whole Swede for 8p each, with the promotions representing savings of 87-89 per cent.

All customers can also get 2kg packs of Morrisons’ The Best potatoes for better than half price at £1.10.

Gareth Lloyd, head of marketing events at Morrisons, said: “Easter is a time for families to come together and enjoy great food. We’re proud to offer our customers quality, fresh British produce at prices that help make their celebrations affordable.

“With these huge savings, we’re making it easier for everyone to enjoy a traditional Easter meal without compromising on quality. These vegetable price cuts are part of Morrisons’ ongoing commitment to deliver quality and value, particularly during key seasonable moments when food plays an even bigger role within our customers’ households.”

From Tuesday 15 April, Asda also dropped the price of five key Easter veg lines to 8p, and in a thinly veiled dig at rivals, pointed out that there was no member pricing or loyalty card needed.

The products on offer in stores and online included 1kg of carrots, a swede, 360g of broccoli, 500g of parsnips and 2kg of potatoes, with the promotion running until Monday 21 April.

The supermarket stressed: “Asda works together with farmers to agree on a fair price all year round. Discounts on veg such as this, at times of the year like Easter and Christmas when families need it most, is an investment made by Asda and doesn’t impact seasonal prices agreed with its growers.”
