Welsh potato specialist Puffin Produce has taken to the small screen with the first television advertisement for Pembrokeshire early potatoes.
Through its Blas Y Tir (Taste of the Land) brand, Haverford-west based Puffin Produce is spearheading a campaign to re-invigorate the traditional place of the Pembrokeshire product on the plates of Welsh diners. “Pembrokeshire Early is one of the best products in Wales,” said Puffin managing director Huw Thomas.“It can go from field to Welsh stores in less than 24 hours.”
The TV advert runs daily at peak viewing times on terrestrial channel ITVWales until 8 July and is believed to be the first television ad for a Welsh vegetable brand.
Puffin has focused heavily on promoting the product this season and Blas y Tir has enjoyed a sales uplift of more than 300 per cent over the past year. Now Puffin wants to branch out further. Thomas added: “We have also started working with a wholesaler in London to open up new distribution channels for the Pembrokeshire Earlies.”
The potato is harvested earlier in the season than many other early types around the UK thanks to Pembrokeshire’s coastal climate. The Blas y Tir product is available in Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose stores throughout Wales. Thomas said: “We have a very loyal Welsh consumer, and our key ambition is to expand our range of Welsh grown vegetables to provide as much fresh produce to our consumers as we can.”
