Industry-backed educational project Grow Your Own Potatoes is being promoted by on-pack stickers on potato supplier Puffin Produce’s Blas Y Tir branded baking potatoes.
The campaign will feature on 250,000 packs of potatoes across selected retail stores in Wales from now until mid-January. It is the first time the project, which provides schools with seed potatoes and educational content, has been promoted in multiple retailers.
The idea is that children take the sticker or potato pack into school to encourage further uptake of the project, while an online database for the promotion allows the Potato Council to track its progess.
“We are thrilled to have this new recruitment tool for Grow Your Own Potatoes,” said Sue Lawton, Potato Council education co-ordinator. “It already reaches three quarters of primary schools, but thanks to continued industry backing we are aiming to build on these numbers in 2015.
“These stickers are a fantastic way to raise the profile of the scheme and reach additional school children and staff throughout Wales.”
Lizzie Caunter, Puffin Produce marketing executive, said: “Grow Your Own Potatoes is such a worthwhile project; as well as supplying the seed potato to schools in Wales, we wanted to further support its success with an on-pack promotional label.
“It is very important that children understand exactly where their food comes from, as well as the values behind fresh produce and the fact that supporting locally grown produce helps to create a sustainable future for Welsh farmers and farmland. Grow Your Own Potatoes does this perfectly and we hope to widen its reach with this promotional activity.'
