More than 500 local schoolchildren descended on a Somerset potato farmon Friday (13 June) to get a glimpse at what life on a farm is like.

One of the UK’s largest potato suppliers, Branston, was on hand at Frogmary Green Farm, in SouthPetherton,to tellthe children just how their favourite potato-based foods are produced.

Ariane Blake, senior field manager, and Angela Cliffe, technical procurement, from Branston'sIllminster site, delivered interactive lessons to the children, givingthem the opportunity to learn how potatoes are grown and the processes involved, from seed to supermarket.

Educating the younger generations on the origins of food and the importance offresh produce in a healthy diet is a key priority for Branston, which also has sites in Lincolnshire and Scotland.

Friday’s event was part of Open Farm Sunday, an initiative to celebrate BritishFarming and allow members of the public chance to visit their local farms.

Frogmary Green has participated for several years, and decided to open itsgates on Friday to give local schools the opportunity to get involved.

Cliffe, meanwhile, was back at Frogmary Green Farm again on Sunday (15 June) to talk aboutpotatoes to over 1,100 visitors who attended the second Open Farm Sunday event.

She said: “Last year’s event was so successful, we knew we’d have to build on that this year, and we did.

'We saw almost 500 children from 13 local schools throughout theday, and it was great to be able to talk to them about potatoes and how they get from field to fork. Educating children on where their food comes from is soimportant, and something we put a large focus on here at Branston.”
