UK growers are set to benefit from a drive to recycle polytunnels, crop covers and greenhouse films as producers try to divert waste from landfill.

Growers looking to demonstrate the strength of their commitment to the environment and play a greater part in closing the loop on waste by keeping re-usable polythene in circulation and out of landfill are using reprocessing company bpi.recycled products.

The business, which operates a network of Environment Agency-accredited reprocessing sites across the UK, plans to use material such as covers and films to create a new range of products including refuse sacks, outdoor furniture and street signs.

In addition, bpi.recycled products will reprocess all product within the UK rather than overseas, as is usually the case.

Sister business bpi.visqueen horticultural products is one of the UK’s best-known suppliers of polythene films for horticultural use, but bpi.recycled products can reprocess waste horticultural polythene products from several different manufacturers and not just its sister operation.

Guy Coates, marketing director at bpi.recycled products, said: “We already reprocess more than 70,000 tonnes of scrap polythene every year, including a considerable amount of waste farm plastic such as used silage bale wrap and empty fertiliser bags. Now, we’re looking to increase our efforts in terms of the horticultural market so that growers can also benefit from a more responsible means of disposing of their polythene.”
