Supporting the 5 A DAY Just Eat More (fruit & veg) programme isn’t something the Subway chain even needed to give much thought to. The Subway chain has been helping its customers to eat more vegetables since it first opened its doors in America in 1965. Customers walking into any one of the chain’s 775 stores in the UK and Ireland have the choice of a delicious fresh salad or can add fresh iceberg lettuce, tomato, cucumber, onion and green pepper to their favourite Sub sandwich.

At Subway, consumers can choose fresh, nutritious, made-to-order subs, salads or wraps prepared right in front of them, just the way they like it. The Subway subs and wraps are different from other sandwiches and fast food options. By having all the salad on offer, customers are guaranteed to get more than 80g of veg - easily enough to provide them with one portion of their 5 A DAY.

That’s why the chain applied for the 5 A DAY licence for its Veggie DeliteTM Salad. We felt Subway had a strong story to tell in terms of promoting healthier options. In contrast to other lunchtime or snack options, the Subway Veggie DeliteTM salad provides not just one, but two of the recommended five daily servings and proudly displays the 5 A DAY logo.

Despite increasing awareness, the Subway chain believes the public still need to be reminded to eat a variety of at least five portions of fruit and veg a day. That is why we felt it was so crucial to support the 5 A DAY programme. The company also believes it’s important to let customers know that food bought and eaten outside of the home can just as easily contribute to their five portions of fruit and veg each day, as meals prepared and consumed at home, providing they choose wisely.

By supporting the 5 A DAY programme and using promotional material in store, we let our customers know that fruit and veg in subs, wraps and salads from the Subway chain can contribute to their five daily servings of fruit and veg.

The company includes the 5 A DAY logo and further information about fruit and vegetables in its Nutrition Guide, which is distributed via its 775 stores throughout the UK. In addition, the subway website www.subway.co.uk provides a link to the 5 A DAY website www.5aday.nhs.uk and displays a large visual of the 5 A DAY logo in support of the programme and its messages.
