Marks & Spencer introduced the 5p charge last year

Marks & Spencer has dramatically cut the number of plastic bags handed out to its customers since introducing a 5p charge per bag last year.

M&S has seen an 83 per cent fall in plastic bag usage in the last twelve million, saving almost 400m bags, reports the Daily Mail.

M&S has cut the number it distributes from 464m to 77m, with the remaining £1.2m profit from the 5p charge going to environmental charity Groundwork, which has directly helped nearly 50 communities through the M&S funding.

M&S chairman Sir Stuart Rose said: “Our customers should be congratulated for the significant impact they have made”.
