Kentish apples shine through

Award winning Cox and other English varieties of locally grown, award winning apples and pears are available for sampling at Asda stores in Kent, throughout October.

With the English apple season in full swing and consumers showing a growing interest in local produce, ASDA will be promoting the seasonal best from Kentish orchards in stores in Greenhithe, Canterbury, Ashford with in store demonstrations and tastings. There will also be a continuous supply of UK apples and pears right through the season at Asda; demonstrating its ongoing support of British farmers.

“We are pleased to be able to offer local seasonal produce to our customers. Asda is totally committed to local sourcing and UK top fruit,” said Jon Morgan category manager from IPL/Asda. “We are working closely with our growers to obtain the best quality fruit and the varieties that our customers want. This year we will make in roads into heritage and exclusive varieties but we will only sell them if they are good enough. Our focus remains on quality and value.'

On the back of a revival of many of the older, traditional varieties of apples, consumers will get the chance to taste something unusual compared to what they may normally purchase.

Josh Kann, general manager for Well Pict County Local, said: “The profile of English fruit is currently very high, consumers are actively sourcing local products and are becoming more aware of seasonal varieties, with ASDA fully supporting the English season, the public appetite for local seasonal fruit can be satisfied.”
