Pippa Palmar with the guide

Produced in Kent launched its new Cherry Ripe guide aimed at promoting the stonefruit and bringing it to the forefront of consumers’ minds at Park Farm Community Cherry Orchard in Lynsted, near Swale.

Cherry Ripe has been launched to coincide with National Cherry Day on July 18 and outlines a circular cherry trail walk in the Kent Downs Area, showing the contrast between the traditional cherry orchards farmed under DEFRA’s Countryside Stewardship Scheme with a modern commercial cherry orchard.

The A5 fold-out guide also includes suggestions for days out in Kent and was produced in conjunction with Kent County Council, Hadlow College and the South East England Development Agency.

Mid Kent Downs’ Pippa Palmar, who researched and wrote the guide, told freshinfo: “Kent is at the heart of UK cherry production and Swale is the most important area for cherry production and holds about 30 per cent of Kent’s cherry cultivation.

“This is mainly because of the soil type and the fact that Henry VIII reinstated cherry trees here in his reign.

“The UK cherry industry looks to be on the up again, with the last five years showing an increase in commercial and traditional yields,” she added.
