Jaffa provided the team bibs

The first youth football league in the London borough of Hackney for more than a century has celebrated its inaugural season by welcoming a new sponsorship deal with Jaffa.

The well-known citrus brand teamed up with the newly formed Hackney Youth Football League (HYFL) to stage the Jaffa Cup for teams of under 12 boys in April. The one-day tournament took place at Mabley Green Park and saw RCC, coached by Marcel Matthews, raise the Jaffa Cup ahead of the nine other teams from the league.

As well as supplying the trophies and hiring pitches for the event, Jaffa has sponsored the HYFL with Jaffa footballs and sports bibs for the teams - as well as Jaffa oranges for half-time.

Phil Vine, founder and manager of HYFL said: “We are really pleased to welcome Jaffa to Hackney, the home of grass roots football. The 200 boys who will be playing in the league every week depend on outside involvement and it’s great that such a well-known - and healthy - brand as Jaffa is lending us its support.”

Marius du Plessis, Jaffa spokesman, was on hand at the April tournament and said he was delighted to get involved with the league. “ Jaffa oranges, grapefruit and easy peelers are perfect for sporting people, young and old. They provide muscles with potassium and hydrate the body, which boost performance; they also have strong antioxidant properties, believed to help you recover quicker from exercise,” he said.
