Onion specialist Stourgarden has launched the first ʻGiant Onionsʼ to the UK market at Tesco.
The over-sized alliums weigh 850g, six times larger than a normal onion, and are grown in San Clemente, Spain.
Stourgarden commercial manager George Rix said the onions are milder than their UK counterparts and have a single centre, as opposed to the common multi-centre usually seen in the British hybrid varieties.
He added: “The San Clemente region is renowned for its climate and long sunlight hours – which allow the crop to reach its full growth potential.”
Harvesting is done by hand to eliminate any damage from bruising.
Tesco onion buyer Emma Williams said new product developments alongside changes in the look and feel of the onion fixture are helping to inspire consumers. “We are always looking for new, innovative products that will excite our customers and this latest introduction fulfils that criteria,” she said.
“As a business we recognise that the onion fixture is an important destination in the shopping trip with the products having a very high penetration.”
Giant Onions are available now for a RRP of £1.00.
