Rural land-based businesses in the West Midlands can now access a new £53 million funding scheme to help them address low carbon business opportunities.

The Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE) is being managed in the region by regional development agency Advantage West Midlands. It is open to to eligible businesses including, growers and farmers, primary producers, rural tourism businesses and other small rural business or community organisations including forestry developing low-carbon projects that improve competitiveness and sustainability.

The scheme will run until 2013, and is jointly funded by Defra and the European Union.

Ian Baker, head of rural renaissance policy at Advantage West Midlands, said: “The opportunities for rural businesses to help reduce carbon emissions through the RDPE programme are significant. Companies involved in RDPE projects can now enter the fast-growing and lucrative environmental economy.”
