The new paper-based, co-branded packaging has been developed by Westfalia Fruit

UK foodservice specialist Fresh Direct has launched new, plastic-free packaging for its best-selling avocado twin-pack.

Fresh Direct said it marked first time that the new packaging, developed its avocado supply partner Westfalia Fruit, had been used in foodservice.

It replaces the current plastic packaging with a paper-based pack, which is made from actively managed, FSC-approved sources, where forests are regenerated as trees are replanted and is fully recyclable.

The co-branded twin packs are wrapped around the avocados providing an additional layer of protection for the product, ensuring that they arrive with the customer in top condition.

“This is another step in our journey to reduce our environmental impact and builds on other recent successes such as the removal of 50 tonnes of plastic from our berries packaging, helping us to continue to lead the foodservice sector,” said Paul Nieduszynski, CEO of Sysco GB, Fresh Direct’s parent company.

“While the major initiatives like our electric vehicles or solar installations may grab the headlines, it’s the work like this that our teams are doing day in and day out that’s also making a real difference.

”Every incremental change we make with our suppliers adds to our goal of becoming a more sustainable organisation,” he added.
