A language support course developed for logistics specialist Fowler Welch Coolchain by the University of Lincoln’s Holbeach Campus has collected a major regional award and was nominated for a national award at a ceremony presided over by HRH the Prince of Wales and former American vice-president Al Gore.

In June, Fowler Welch Coolchain was presented with The Big Tick accolade by Business In The Community (BITC) at the organisation’s annual awards dinner, in recognition of excellent practice in the delivery of a language support course - developed by Rachel Bowser and Sue Burke at the University of Lincoln’s Holbeach Campus - for their migrant LGV drivers.

Culminating in a City & Guild’s qualification, migrant drivers were initially assessed and then enrolled on a 19-week short course, designed to help their language skills. The course was developed in response to a shortage of English-speaking LGV drivers.

Fowler Welch Coolchain and the Holbeach Campus team then attended the national awards ceremony at London’s Royal Albert Hall on July 2.

Rachel Bowser, subject leader, Holbeach Campus, commented: “It was a glittering evening and we were really pleased to have been shortlisted along with other regional winners. We are delighted that our work with Fowler Welch Coolchain has been recognised and we are looking forward to developing both the course and our relationship with Fowler Welch Coolchain - who knows, maybe next year we can go one better!”

As well as improving safety and better communication, the course also helped Fowler Welch Coolchain’s migrant drivers improve their language skills in social situations. Drivers were given a range of tailored learning materials, including CDs to be listened to whilst on the road, and, because it is a short course, disruption to the business was kept to an absolute minimum.

The BITC Awards for Excellence recognise the positive impact of responsible business in the marketplace, workplace, environment and community. The Workplace Impact Awards category entered by Fowler Welch Coolchain and the Holbeach Campus focuses on recognising companies that support employees in the development of their essential literacy, numeracy and language skills in the workplace.
