Bedford-based chilli experts, Shawn and Joanna Plumb of Edible Ornamentals have been crowned East Anglian Local Food Hero 2009.

The title is awarded by the popular Good Food Television’s Market Kitchen programme for businesses that provide the very best in quality produce, excellence in customer service, commitment and passion for their products, and have a strong connection to their local area.

Food lovers across the nation were asked to nominate their favourite growers, farm shops or restaurants that met these criteria. The Plumbs beat off stiff competition from 10 other East Anglian businesses and now compete with the other nine regional winners in the TV programme’s grand final for the chance to be named National Local Food Hero 2009.

Joanna Plumb said: “We felt quite honoured that out customers put us forward for this award, and being voted East Anglia’s Local Food Hero is recognition of our passion for chillies and good wholesome fresh produce. Bedfordshire is the chilli capital of the UK and I hope that appearing on the show will encourage more people to use fresh chillies and add a new dimension to their cooking.”

Shawn and Joanna began growing chillies in 2001, and in 2004 developed their own range of gourmet chilli sauces. As well as selling their produce to a growing band of loyal chilli aficionados from all over the country, they also supply their local Waitrose store and Morrisons stores in the Eastern region, as well as leading London restaurants.
