Cornish grower E W Button & Son is expecting to see a significant financial and environmental benefit from the installation of a new heat-recovery system.
The potato and blueberry grower has installed a pair of German-made heat-recovery machines, supplied by DK Heat Recovery, which it says will reduce the hot water and heating bill for the business to zero. Waste heat energy from the coldstore refrigeration equipment will be recovered to provide hot water for over 300 showers a day.
Further energy is being harvested from unwanted refrigeration waste heat, which will provide hot water to service the underfloor heating system for the new office and welfare accommodation block.
The new system, which is expected to deliver annual savings of £12,000 per year and 45 tonnes of carbon, is capable of providing 960 litres of hot water for every hour.
The company said: 'In addition to the attractive financial savings for the business, E W Button can be proud of their green credentials of their top-quality products, by reducing the carbon emissions of the business.'
