The Art of Being an Apple - a tribute to a Dutch still life - by German photographer Michael Meisen has won the Pink Lady Apple a Day category at the Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year 2018.
Meisen's photograph was enough to see off 8,000 competitor entries at the celebration of the art of food photography and film at the Mall Galleries in London this week, and earned him a £1,000 prize. Judges said his shot stood outfor the way in which he made the subject matter so stunning and distinctive.
The overall best photo prize went toBangladeshi photographer Noor Ahmed Gelal, whose shot Praying with Food (below) depicts the breaking of a day-long fast at a Hindu temple in Dhaka. That netted Gelal a £5,000 prize, which was presented to him by Pink Lady's Andy Macdonald.
Martin Parr, one of the world’s leading social documentary photographers, whose work shows food in its cultural place in society, was presented with the Outstanding Achievement Award by Frances Morris, director of Tate Britain.
The judging panel was chaired by internationally-renowned food photographer David Loftus and also included Emily Luchetti, chair of the James Beard Foundation; chef Ferran Adria; Wajmar Yaqubi, global photo director at Buzzfeed; and His Excellency Ali Bin Thalith, secretary general of HIPA.
