Moroccan fruit and veg grower demonstrates commitment to social and environmental responsibility with new accreditation
Moroccan fresh produce grower-exporter Delassus has embarked on an ambitious journey toward B-Corp certification, a designation that signifies a company’s commitment to high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability.
This rigorous process, overseen by the non-profit organization B Lab, has taken Delassus two years and requires a fundamental shift in mindset among its growers and staff, the company’s deputy managing director Fatiha Charrat told FPJ at the Fruit Logistica trade show earlier this month.
“Achieving B Corp certification necessitates a keen awareness of various operational aspects, including waste management, energy consumption, water use, and governance practices,” she says. “Delassus is now poised for inspection, with the understanding that B Lab inspectors can arrive without prior notice. This journey is about truth, not merely confidence.”
As part of its social responsibility initiative, the group is investing in a school for workers’ children, reflecting a long-term investment in the community.
“I’m really excited about this project,” she says. “It is one that is very close to my heart and I can’t wait to see it finished.”
As Delassus looks ahead, it is also contemplating a new direction. After successfully achieving its goals in the citrus and tomato sectors, as well as exploring opportunities in avocado supply, the group is considering introducing new products to its portfolio, Charrat reveals.
