early potatoes

This year’s harvest of Comber Earlies has arrived on shelves two weeks later than expected.

The new season potato - which has protected EU status as only potatoes planted, grown and harvested within the protected geographical indicated area during May, June and July can be marketed as Comber Earlies - has been delayed for some growers due to a late frost in May, one grower in Northern Ireland toldUTV.

County Down producer Hugh Chambers told the local broadcaster: “We plant those potatoes any time after 1 January if weather conditions allow, and we hope to dig them in the last week in May usually.

“This year has been a bit more difficult because of late frost in May which destroyed a lot of potatoes in this area.'
