Carrots learn the simple Bare Necessities of veg

Baloo, Paddington, Rupert and organic, pesticide residue-free carrots - think there’s an odd one out on the list? Incorrect.

Scottish organic root vegetable firm Tio has launched a cheeky new carrot brand, Bare Necessities, fronted by a bear.

The brand includes a number of offers including an 80g cut stick snack pack and a 700g whole head bagged product.

The Forres-based grower, packer and processor, which supplies own-label organic root veg into Tesco, is already eyeing up extensions to the range within and outside fresh produce, including carrot cake and carrot hummus.

The brand was launched in spectacular style at upmarket organic retailer Whole Food Market’s Kensington store in London by a large jazz-loving dancing bear.

The brand will initially be stocked just in Whole Foods with a number of major multiples interested in the product.

Tio’s Stewart Miller told freshinfo at the launch: “The organic market has been struggling since the recession and we wanted to expand our brand and customer loyalty.”

He added: “We do blind taste testing internally and our carrots always turn out on top, also we have been talking to more than 1,000 consumers and two focus groups with organic buyers to develop the brand.”

Tio, which claims to be the UK’s largest organic carrot grower, also exports raw root vegetables to Ireland, the Netherlands, Germany and Scandanavia.
