Waitrose has launched a new fruit which looks like a little pink strawberry, but tastes just like bubblegum.

The exclusive perfumed Bubbleberries, the official name being fragaria moschata, went on sale in selected Waitrose branches from Wednesday (30 April).

Although the fruit was very popular in the 19th century, long before bubblegum itself was invented, it gradually fell from popularity.

But Waitrose is now supporting the resurgence of this heritage berry, bringing this unusual variety back to a modern-day audience.

Waitrose berry buyer, Nikki Baggott, said: “This is one of the most aromatic berries we have ever sold at Waitrose. The Bubbleberry has an incredibly strong perfume which will take you straight back to your childhood. They have an incredibly familiar taste, which is much more likely to be found in a sweet shop than the fruit and vegetable aisle. We hope our customers will enjoy experimenting with this surprising flavour.”

Waitrose Bubbleberries, £4.99/ 100g, will be available for five weeks in the following London branches: Waitrose Canary Wharf; Waitrose Finchley; Waitrose Gloucester Road; Waitrose Holloway Road; Waitrose Wandsworth;John Lewis Foodhall Oxford Street; and John Lewis Foodhall Bluewater.
