British flower-growers have been given a boost by one leading retailer selling poinsettias solely grown on the Cambridgeshire and Norfolk border.
The Co-operative is forecast to sell more than 76,000 of the crimson-coloured festive plants with star-shaped leaves, which have become a staple decoration and home-brightener over the Christmas season.
The plants went on sale at stores on Tuesday - a week earlier than usual.
The supplier, KJ Curson Growers in Upwell, Wisbech, has been growing poinsettias for over eight years.
Nicky Baynton, buyer for horticulture at The Co-operative Food, said: “We are really proud to offer our shoppers 100 per cent British poinsettias this year, and a week earlier than usual. The demand for poinsettias at Christmas just keeps on growing.
“Poinsettias are sensitive to temperature change, so they must be kept away from drafts and cold areas. Water regularly with tepid water to keep the compost moist - but not drenched - and poinsettias should last over the festive season. They really are a beautiful addition to the home during Christmas.”
The poinsettias are priced at £3.50 each.
