British chefs in battle for Spanish cookery prize

Chefs from across the UK have been chosen to take part in a Masterchef-style cook off to be crowned Food from Spain’s Spanish Young Chef of the Year 2012.

The competition could be as tense the over-the-top TV show as the nine finalists compete to win a work placement in Akelare, one of Spain’s best Michelin-starred restaurants.

The finalists are:

Esme Broadbent, City College Norwich

Ben Murphy, Koffmans at The Berkeley

Samantha Bream, Coleg Llandrillo

William Chilila, The Orrery Restaurant

Daniel Lee, Westminster Kingsway College

Bartosz Kesik, Opera Tavern Restaurant

Anna Gurowska, University of West London

Billy Stock, Salt Yard Restaurant

Joseph Allen, Westminster Kingsway College

The cook off final will take place on 21st January in London. The competition was launched in 2008 to inspire talented young chefs to explore and experiment with Spanish produce and the country’s dishes.

It is part of the campaign to promote Spanish produce in the UK throughout the year, including Picota cherries, persimon, strawberries and raspberries.
