James Kay got creative with Bramleys

James Kay from New College Stamford has beaten off fierce competition to whisk away the top prize at the national Bramley Bursary catering contest.

Kay has won a placement in the kitchens of Michelin-star chef Angela Hartnett, as well as £1,000 for himself and £500 for his college.

The final cook-off was held at Westminster Kingsway College, London last week and was judged by Adrian Barlow, chairman of the Bramley Campaign, Keith Burton from the catering distribution company Sodexho, Shenley Clouston from Leiths School of Food and Wine and Gary Hunter from Westminster Kingsway College.

They commended Kay’s ‘Assiette of Bramley’ for its creativity, innovative blend of tastes and for the chef’s ability to use Bramley in a variety of ways.

The bursary was set up by the Bramley Campaign to encourage catering students to use Bramley apples and continue to do so throughout their careers.
