Booths celebrates Re:fresh nomination

Booths is celebrating after being shortlisted for the title of QV Fresh Approach Multiple Retailer of the Year in the Re:fresh Awards 2010.

Booths will now go head to head with national supermarket chains Morrisons and Aldi in the final. The winner will be announced at an awards ceremony on 13 May at the InterContinental London Park Lane Hotel.

This is the second consecutive year that Booths has been named as a finalist for the award.

Matthew Bruno, fresh produce buyer for Booths, said: “Booths is passionate about providing customers with the freshest, top-quality and best-tasting produce possible. We are very proud of our strong and long-standing relationships with growers, many of whom have supplied our stores for more than 20 years.

“Our innovative products include dug-today potatoes, which are delivered in store the same day they are picked, and we recently introduced fresh juice bars where customers can squeeze their own oranges. You really can’t get any fresher than that.”

Booths has a strong local sourcing policy for its 26 stores in Lancashire, Cheshire, Cumbria and Yorkshire, meaning that fresh produce is often in store within 24 hours of being picked.

It has put focus on local produce such as Westmorland damsons, Yorkshire rhubarb and Southport marsh samphire and has a 100 per cent British tomato sourcing policy.

For the past two years, Booths has run a healthy eating campaign encouraging customers to eat their 5 A DAY. It also organises a school gardening competition called Grow Your Own which helps children understand where fruit and vegetables come from.

Now in their seventh year, the Re:fresh awards are judged by an independent panel invited by organisers the Fresh Produce Consortium (FPC) and FPJ to recognise outstanding achievement across the fresh produce industry.

The multiple retailer category applies to chains with more than 25 stores within the UK which stock fresh produce.
