More than 15 salad bars will be built in schools in the Washington DC area after donations to the Grower-Shipper Association of Central California (GSA) and United Fresh’s Salad for School campaigns.
At a GSA charity golf event, $43,000 was donated to support the two campaigns, with donations led by Taylor Farms and Dole Fresh.
GSA chair Margaret D’Arrigo-Martin said: “I’m thrilled with the support from so many people to bring salad bars to local schools, and support nutrition education and training for students and school staff.”
Tom Stenzel, United Fresh CEO, added: “It’s great for our two associations to work together supporting a cause that’s a win-win for our industry and our children.”
The United Fresh 'Let’s Move Salad Bars to Schools' campaign, developed to raise the visibility of salad bars as an effective strategy for increasing children’s fresh produce consumption at school, has already set up 1,600 salad bars in schools throughout the United States.
The Grower-Shipper Association Foundation’s More Produce in Schools programme is a new initiative focused on finding solutions to the national obesity epidemic by focusing on avenues to bring more produce into schools.
