Asda has come top of the class for its contribution to the community.

The retailer scooped a gold medal at Food and Drink Federation (FDF) Community Partnership Awards, topping the education category with its Healthy Breakfast Challenge.

More than 550,000 primary school children were educated on the benefits of healthy eating between 2001 and 2005 as part of Asda’s Big Healthy Eating Drive, which introduced the healthy breakfast theme last year.

Breakfast clubs were set up in participating schools and Asda provided the first months’ products for free, as well as a comprehensive advice pack, which included breakfast ideas, a quiz and suggestions for role-play activities.

Julian Hunt, FDF director of communications, and judge for the awards, said: “The food industry’s unstinting dedication towards community initiatives should be commended. Our industry has a long history of implementing schemes which help to educate, inspire and develop local communities across the UK and the awards reward this fantastic but often unsung work.”
