Approval for EU export promotion

The European Commission has approved measures to provide information on, and to promote, fresh fruit and vegetables in third countries. Member States submitted 12 promotion and information programmes across all sectors of agriculture to the Commission to be examined and eight have been accepted. These include one to promote Italian organges, easy-peelers, kiwifruit, table grapes and radicchio to the US and one to promote French and Italian apples, carrots and kiwifruit to 11 countries in the near, middle and far East, Canada, Russia, Switzerland and Norway. The EU will fund 50 per cent of the budget of the programmes.

“Improving the competitiveness of EU quality products on markets outside the EU is a major challenge,” said EU farm commissioner Fischer Boel. “By investing in promotion and information campaigns for our agricultural products outside the EU, the European Union is showing its determination to take up this challenge.”

Eurofel is running the Franco-Italian promotion and Bellavita and Unagro are working together on the promotion of Italian products to the US.
